"German Venice"-Potsdam-Bodensee - Romantic road - Fairy tale road - Zugspitze cog train
Spreewald is a biosphere reserve declared by Unesco. But like most tourists I've experienced the touch of nature on the water channels in a specialy designed boat. It was a fun way of exploring some of the 200 channels! with houses, farms, even a post office on the banks. And there are some stalls with famous pickled cucumbers and an interesting skansen museum. Here you can learn more about Slavic tribe Sorbs, whose language is on the edge of extinction. A stay in the Mercure schlosshotel in Luebbenau adds more flavor to the visit...
Some 50 km to the East there is another Unesco gem - Splendid castle with a big park in Bad Muskau, It was divided by the new border after the WW2, but since 2007 it is united again as there are no more officials on the border. Park with dozens km of paths is best explored on a bicycle. The author was prince Hermann Pückler-Muskau, who 150 years ago also wrote some still actual books about landscape gardening.
Gorlitz on the border with Poland is a real medievial pearl - historical town center was almost intact during the war. No wonder even famous film makers are interested to make movies here. Big plus is that the town is not well known among the tourists so it is not so crowded. There are some nice restaurants, good local food and beer and try mustard in dozens variations - even with whiskey! Lots of bridges also mean that it is easy to cross the border, but the Polish side is not so interesting- except for the lower prices.
Potsdam - no doubdts one of the most interesting towns in Germany: so many palaces, gardens (Unesco heritage) plus lots of rivers, lakes, restored historical center with Russian and even Dutch touch. Not to mention famous Cecilienhof, where the Potsdam conference was held at the end of the WWII, One of the best tours I had was visiting the Babelsberg district, which is famous for the best film studios in the world. Unfortunately we couldn't visit them, but with a knowledgeable guide famous movie stars and secrets of the movies became alive...
Another inovative tour is a visit of Sanssouci palace in a company of a humorous actor dressed as he had just came from the 18th century.
Bodensee lake
Each room is individually furnished, guest are accompanied by paintings, sculptures and art installations. The restaurant is known far the dishes with organic ingredients.

Bodensee lake
boasts a surprisingly mild climate. When I greet vineyards, lavender, palm and fruit plantations of the lake shore, I feel like somewhere in the Mediterranean. The most attractive old cities are Konstanz, Wasserburg, Meersburg, Friedrichshafn and Lindau. The latter is in an idyllic location on the island.
Cities are easily accessible by boat, as the traffic around the lake is heavy. In 1900 there was a first flight of zeppelin on the lake. It was made by ferdinand von Zeppelin. The biggest aircrafts were flying between Europe and America, all the way to catastrophic fire on one of them in 1937. Today zeppelins are again produced in Frierdchshafn, where I flew with one. It is recommended, as this offer the most beautiful lake view and a unique sense of flight. In the same place there is also a museum dedicated to the zeppelins.
www.zeppelinflug.deA romantic return to bygone times can be experienced on the water, with exemplary restored steamship Hohentwiel.Lake water invigorates eleven islands. Among the best known is Reichenau, on which stands the monastery and a few churces. By far the greatest number of visitors are attracted to the island Mainau inviting with an attractive botanical garden.
I found this unusual accommodation in Efrizweiler in the village, at the Schloss der Kunst - Castle of Art www.schloss-der-kuenste.deEach room is individually furnished, guest are accompanied by paintings, sculptures and art installations. The restaurant is known far the dishes with organic ingredients.
On the Austrian side of the lake Bregenz is worth a visit - with a huge water theater. Near Bregenz I stayed in one of the most comfortable hostels:
Romantic road
links places between Füssen and Würzburg. It was created in 1950 to attract tourists in the state of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg after the war. Füssen, a former summer residence of the bishops of Augsburg, is a pleasant town for a short stop. The Baroque city center of Benedictine monasteryrises above the Lech River near Lake Foggensee. The historic center with its castle, facades, cafés and stores stocked plenty of creatively suggests what to expect in the following places at the Romantic Road. Just a few kilometers away invites a fairytale castle Neuschwanstein, which was in the 19th century conceived of King Ludwig II. Of Bavaria. Due to the lack of money was never completed, the king has spent more time in the family mansion Linderhof.
Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber represent the most attractive places along the Romantic Road as the only completely surrounded by medieval walls. Rothenburg is the biggest jewel of tourism. Due to a number of daily visitors it is worth to stay in the city because the city is almost empty at night. For a moderate price you can sleep in the hostel, which is arranged in a medieval mill:
leads through the places full of legends and myths inspired by the Brothers Grimm. I started the trip in Hameln, which is known thanks to the rats! Nice white rodents attached to the sidewalks and streets are literally followed me at every turn and led me to some interesting places. Richly decorated facades of Renaissance houses clearly illustrate the wealthy former owners, who have come to riches thanks to the important trade route on the river Weser. The shops and bars are trying to attract visitors at the expense of the old legend of ratcatcher that the city saved from annoying rodents. You could see rats all sorts of shapes and sizes in souvenir shops, bakeries and even pastry shops rat dough with sugar or marzipan, or try strong drink "rat poison" that contains 50% of alcohol. The legendary story was staged for the first time in the city streets in 1956. Every Sunday from May until September at noon a crowd of thousands of visitors expects to start the show. Visitors could enjoy mini shows every day. In the frontage of the Old Town Hall is located a mechanism that runs three times a day and running the right puppet show.
One of the special places in the Fairytale path is Bodenwerder, where was born lying baron Munchhausna. His heroic story were written by numerous authors, and it is now reminiscent of statues in the city and theater. In one of the sculptural depiction he is sitting on the cannonball, a little further he is pulling a flock of geese out of the water in the window of the bakery sits on a giant donut, a few steps away he is fascinated by beer...
The highest German railroad
climbs nearly to the highest German mountain Zugspitze(2962 m). Mountain cog railway starts in Garmich-Partenkirchen and runs through a steep tunnel to Zugspitzplatt plateau (2588 m). From here you could walk to the summit or choose the more comfortable option, ride on a gondola. Railway line was built from 1928 and 1930. The ascent to it is not spectacular, but it is a nice all-day experience, which allows numerous combinations. Spend some time in underlying ski resort which is decorated with old wall paintings. More of them could be admired in the nearest village Oberammergau. Among them are fairy tales, but the biggest event in the cityare the passion plays, which organizes every ten years (2020 nex one).
